Illinois wants to decriminalize rearview mirror air fresheners SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WTVO) — Illinois lawmakers have introduced a bill that would no longer make it illegal for drivers to have items hanging from their rearview mirror.According to House Bill 2389, police would no longer have the authority to stop a motorist for having an item, like an air freshener, hanging from their rearview mirror while driving. The bill was proposed by Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias and Rep. La Shawn Ford (D-Chicago).Currently, Illinois law prohibits items from hanging from a rearview mirror or be affixed to a windshield, on the grounds that they obstruct a driver's vision.According to a press release, "this arcane law can serve as a pretext for racially motivated traffic stops for minor infractions.""We need to do everything we can to reduce the need for police interactions with people for non-violent and non-threatening violations," Ford said.Illinois is one of a handful of states with laws banning items from hanging from a rearview mirror. The bill follow...

Opinion: No choice but for big cuts along the Colorado River basin

Opinion: No choice but for big cuts along the Colorado River basin The mighty Colorado River is endangered. Persistent massive drought, exacerbated by climate change, overuse, and ever-rising demand, has taken a heavy toll.Water levels have dwindled and remain at a historic low in Lake Mead and Lake Powell, the largest human-made reservoirs in the United States – so low in Lake Mead a year ago that it came close to hitting dead pool status, which occurs when water levels are too low to generate electricity. This wet winter’s record-breaking snowpacks will not resolve the crisis: with just a few consecutive dry winters in the future, dead pool status will likely be a reality. The Colorado River supplies water and electricity to 40 million people. It irrigates farmland and meets the various needs of industry and municipalities. The Colorado River basin covers seven U.S. states – the upper basin states of Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico, and the lower basin states of Arizona, Nevada, and California – and two states in Mexico, Baja California and...

Was Avalanche’s season failure or honorable Stanley Cup defense? “We put up a hell of a fight.” Cale Makar sat silent in full uniform. The young face of the Colorado Avalanche revealed no expression on his face, only a blank stare toward the middle of the losing locker room where teammates’ jerseys had already been discarded into the laundry heap. His jersey remained attached to him for 15 extra minutes. He didn’t want to part with it yet. He didn’t understand how to part with it this early.“It’s tough to grasp right now,” Makar eventually said long after Colorado’s 2-1 Game 7 loss to Seattle late Sunday. The 24-year-old, who had just played his 62nd career playoff game, never experienced a first-round exit in his first four postseasons. In the Makar Era, the Avs win a series. At least one. That much is an expectation, a source of comfort.Except they didn’t this time. Seattle stole not just Game 7 but a seven-game series from the champs and was celebrating a franchise first down the hall. So, as Colorado’s shocked locker room emptied, Makar didn’t budge from the seat of his stal...
