Digital literacy: Can the republic ‘survive an algorithm’? SEATTLE (AP) — Shawn Lee, a high school social studies teacher in Seattle, wants to see lessons on the internet akin to a kind of 21st century driver’s education, an essential for modern life.Lee has tried to bring that kind of education into his classroom, with lessons about the need to double-check online sources, to diversify newsfeeds and to bring critical thinking to the web. He’s also created an organization for other teachers to share resources.“This technology is so new that no one taught us how to use it,” Lee said. “People are like, ‘There’s nothing we can do,’ and they throw their hands in the air. I disagree with that. I would like to think the republic can survive an algorithm.”Lee’s efforts are part of a growing movement of educators and misinformation researchers working to offset an explosion of online misinformation about everything from presidential politics to pandemics. So far, the U.S. lags many other democracies in waging this battle, and the ...

Avalanche: 2nd body found of Swedish skiers near Mont Blanc ROME (AP) — Rescue crews recovered a second body Monday in a search for two Swedish skiers who were caught in an avalanche near Mont Blanc on Italy’s northern border with France, authorities said. Two people who were part of the group of four off-piste skiers survived Sunday’s avalanche in the Val Veny, above Courmayeur, and had sounded the alarm. Due to bad weather Sunday, rescue crews weren’t able to use helicopters to reach the site but had to get there with snowmobiles. By Monday the skies had cleared and a helicopter identified the body of the second missing skier after the first one had been found Sunday. The city of Courmayeur confirmed that the victims were two Swedish women in their 20s, city spokesman Moreno Vignolini said in an email. Both bodies were brought to Courmayeur for identification purposes, the Val D’Aosta Alpine Rescue service said in a text message. The avalanche risk Sunday for the area was a level three — “considerable” danger on a scale of five. Millions of dead fish wash up amid Australian heat wave CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Millions of fish have washed up dead in southeastern Australia in a die-off that authorities and scientists say is caused by depleted oxygen levels in the river after recent floods and hot weather.Residents of the Outback town of Menindee in New South Wales state complained of a terrible smell from the dead fish.“The stink was terrible. I nearly had to put a mask on,” said local nature photographer Geoff Looney. Cohen: Trump will ‘absolutely’ take mugshot, be fingerprinted if arrested “I was worried about my own health. That water right in the top comes down to our pumping station for the town. People north of Menindee say there’s cod and perch floating down the river everywhere,” he said. The Department of Primary Industries said the fish deaths were likely caused by low oxygen levels as floods recede, a situation made worse by fish needing more oxygen because of the warmer weather. In this image from video, dead fish float on the surface of the lower Dar...

Hi Jaime, My name is Jocelyn and I’m a long time fan of the show and wanted to get your opinion on something. So i was asked to be in my friend's wedding party a few months ago and said yes to being a bridesmaid. I had all intentions of doing it until I found out that my parents, in honor of their 50th wedding anniversary, booked a two-week cruise vacation for our entire family as a surprise. They even went so far as to contact my and my sibling's places of work to make sure we could go. So now I have to pull out of my friend's wedding, but it's three weeks away. I will happily do everything leading up to the wedding, like the shower and the bachelorette party, but I can't do the wedding. Am I wrong for picking my family over being a bridesmaid? Some of my other fri...

Ask Amy: Teen daughter must become her own parent

Ask Amy: Teen daughter must become her own parent Dear Amy: I have a very difficult and stressful relationship with my mother, and I don’t know what to do about it.I am now 19 years old.My mother is an addict and an alcoholic, and she missed out on much of my early childhood years because of it.When I was around eight, she finally sobered up, but she still has a multitude of psychological problems, most likely stemming from years of substance abuse, and she never really grew up.She only thought about herself. She hurt me over and over again. She put her maternal duties aside and wasn’t there for me.Finally, I had enough when she missed my high school graduation last year. She then lied to me about why she had missed it (turns out she was at home the whole time).I tried to tell her how much this had hurt me. In response, she cried, engaged in theatrics, pitied herself, and essentially told me that she was giving up on our relationship because she “always messes up.”I begged her to try to change — for me — but it appears she wo...
