49ers’ Purdy puts his perfect start on the line in a road game against Browns’ top-rated defense

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 11:07:02 GMT

CLEVELAND (AP) — Brock Purdy has been labeled a game manager and system quarterback. He has been described as robotic, savvy and consistent. Most famously, he has been called Mr. Irrelevant. However, there’s one word that perhaps best sums up the startling start to his professional career: Perfect. In less than two seasons, San Francisco’s 23-year-old QB has risen from being the final pick in the NFL draft (hence Mr. Irrelevant) to being in the conversation as one of the early frontrunners for MVP this season.Going into Sunday’s game against Cleveland’s top-ranked defense, Purdy leads the league in passer rating (123.1) while completing 72.1% of his passes. He has thrown nine touchdown passes, zero interceptions and allowed fans in the Bay Area to turn the page on Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance. And in case anyone was still wondering if his start was a flash or fluke, Purdy threw four TD passes last week as the 49ers (5-0) demolished Dallas 42-10 on national TV ...

JERUSALEM (AP) — Palestinians fled in a mass exodus Friday from northern Gaza after Israel’s military told some 1 million people to evacuate to the southern part of the besieged territory ahead of an expected ground invasion in retaliation for the surprise attack by the ruling Hamas militant group. The U.N. warned that evacuating almost half of crowded Gaza's population would be calamitous, and it urged Israel to reverse the unprecedented directive. As airstrikes hammered the territory throughout the day, families in cars, trucks and donkey carts packed with possessions streamed down a main road out of Gaza City. Denver man’s family members taken hostage by Hamas Hamas’ media office said warplanes struck cars fleeing south, killing more than 70 people. The Israeli military said its troops conducted temporary raids into Gaza to battle militants and hunted for traces of some 150 people abducted in Hamas's assault on Israel nearly a week ago.In urging the evacuation, Israel’s military...

(CNN) — Elon Musk’s social media company, X (formerly known as Twitter), broke the law when it fired one of its employees for “exercising their right to protected concerted activity” following X’s return-to-office mandate, according to a complaint from the National Labor Relations Board. The complaint alleges that a high-ranking X official told workers, “If you can physically make it to an office and you don’t show up, resignation accepted.” One employee reached out to coworkers on Slack and encouraged them not to resign but instead wait to get fired. The employee was illegally terminated for their actions, according to the complaint. The NLRB protects workers’ legal right to engage in “concerted activity,” which is when two or more coworkers band together to address workplace issues.A hearing about the complaint is scheduled for January 30 in San Francisco. METHUEN — Mike Murnane made an emphatic return to the field.Murnane, who was sidelined the first five weeks of the season with a broken collarbone, scored the go-ahead touchdown as part of a fourth quarter that saw him rush for 63 yards as Billerica remained undefeated with a 23-13 road win over Methuen over Friday night at Nicholson Stadium.Billerica (6-0) has now beaten Central Catholic, Tewksbury and Methuen on the road this season.“Mike Murnane makes all the difference in the world,” Billerica coach Duane Sigsbury said. “This team is special. We have kids that can play. Our kids put in an absolutely unbelievable effort.”All offseason and summer, Murnane was set to be Billerica’s starting quarterback. King Philip defense carries the day in 13-7 win over Foxboro

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 11:07:02 GMT

FOXBORO — The brand of football King Philip plays generally does not build excitement. The Warriors suffocate opponents on defense, and bludgeon them in the running game.Using that successful formula again, KP earned a 13-7 win Friday night at Foxboro in a Hockomock League crossover.KP improves to 6-0, while Foxboro took its first loss at 5-1. The victory also prevented Foxboro coach Jack Martinelli from winning his 300th game for at least a week.“It’s tough to make a living just lining up and pounding straight ahead when everybody knows what you’re going to do,” King Philip coach Brian Lee said. “At the same time, you’re working a little clock trying to keep them off the field. We really missed some big opportunities. Missed a field goal, (didn’t convert a) fourth and 1. We missed them, they stopped us. Those things kept them in the game, fighting until the end like they always do.“It’s always a battle over here. Did I expect a b...
