Bill placing incarcerated parents close to their children signed into law

Incarcerated parents housed in more than 30 state prisons around California could be moved closer to their children, now that the “Keep Families Close” bill was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom on Friday and will take effect in January.“All of us, whether we are Republicans or Democrats, have children in our districts who have done nothing wrong and who have been separated from their parent due to incarceration,” Democratic Assemblymember and co-author Matt Haney previously told the Mercury News.AB 1226 — which had bipartisan support — will not trigger the relocation of every single incarcerated parent, but it will allow them to request transfers to a prison nearest their child’s home. The new law does not apply to people convicted of crimes that exclude them from child visitation rights, such as violence or sex related offenses. There are thousands of children in California with an incarcerated parent, but most of parents are housed in institut...

SF Giants’ scuffle continues against Tigers, return home on six-game losing streak

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 04:02:42 GMT

The Giants got superb defense. They got a strong pitching performance.Once again, the bats failed them.Bringing a once-promising road trip to a nightmarish end in a Monday matinee, the Giants were humbled, 5-1, by the Tigers, their sixth straight loss to end a road trip that began with five wins in a row. After being swept over the weekend for the first time this season by the Nationals, they managed to be swept again only a day later, in the makeup game of a questionably postponed series finale from their second road trip of the season (Detroit won the first two games in April). The starting pitcher with the fortune to face a badly scuffling group, playing its 11th game in its fourth city since the All-Star break, was Hayward’s own Tarik Skubal, a 26-year-old lefty making his fourth start back since elbow surgery. He struck out nine over five innings before handing off to the Tigers’ bullpen, who brought the total number of victims to 15, in only the Giants’ latest...

They drafted Richardson behind 2021 Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young and C.J. Stroud but ahead of Kentucky’s Will Levis. The 6-foot-4, 232-pound Richardson posted the fastest 40-yard dash time (4.43 seconds) along with the best vertical jump (40 1/2 inches) and broad jump (10 feet, 9 inches) of the 15 quarterbacks at the NFL combine. He was a no-brainer for the Colts, who went 4-12-1 last season with three different starters. The question now is when will Richardson take over. A franchise that has had six different starters...
