A 34-year-old man seen on a Ring doorbell camera swinging at and kicking a Labradoodle in an Anaheim apartment complex last year has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty and was placed on one year of probation, authorities said Wednesday, Sept. 6.Albert Frank Abad Jr., 34, agreed to a court offer from Orange County Superior Court Judge Justin Glenn-Leistikow that reduced the charge from a felony, allowing  Abad Jr. to avoid jail time, said Kimberly Edds, spokeswoman for the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.Prosecutors had sought a 30-day jail sentence, she said.Though judges have the ability to reduce crimes from felonies to misdemeanors, Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer disagreed with Glenn-Leistikow’s decision to lower the crime, calling it “shocking” that the judge would “exercise that discretion to give a break to someone who clearly has no issue engaging in cruelty to a vulnerable animal.“The love of a dog is unconditional and to betray t...

By Gary Fields | Associated PressWASHINGTON — Concern for U.S. democracy amid deep national polarization has prompted the entities supporting 13 presidential libraries dating back to Herbert Hoover to call for a recommitment to the country’s bedrock principles, including the rule of law and respecting a diversity of beliefs. The statement released Thursday, the first time the libraries have joined to make such a public declaration, said Americans have a strong interest in supporting democratic movements and human rights around the world because “free societies elsewhere contribute to our own security and prosperity here at home.”“But that interest,” it said, “is undermined when others see our own house in disarray.”The joint message from presidential centers, foundations and institutes emphasized the need for compassion, tolerance and pluralism while urging Americans to respect democratic institutions and uphold secure and accessible election...

There’s a better way to fight wildfires, indigenous groups say

Indigenous advocates say their own methods are more effective, safer and kinder to native flora and fauna. In the wake of Black Summer three years ago, Australian politicians said they’d prioritize Indigenous techniques. It’s since funded a range of grants and says it is continuing to make investments. But Indigenous organizations say far more is needed, especially now, with El Niño conditions bringing warmer temperatures that portend a more severe fire season.Bloomberg Green spoke with two leaders of Australian organizations that pr...
